The Latest: The new alternative facts: 'Truth isn't truth'

Aug 20, 2018

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. — The Latest on President Donald Trump (all times local): 11:50 a.m. Move over, alternative facts. Now, truth isn't truth. President Donald Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani used the line Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press" with Chuck Todd. Giuliani was trying to make the case that having Trump sit down for an interview with special counsel Robert Mueller's team wouldn't accomplish much because of the he-said-she-said nature of witnesses' recollections. Giuliani says it's "silly" to say Trump should testify "because he's going to tell the truth and he shouldn't worry" because "it's somebody's version of the truth....

Backstreet Boys fans treated for injuries after storm

Aug 20, 2018

THACKERVILLE, Okla. — An Oklahoma casino says 14 people suffered cuts and bruises when a powerful rainstorm toppled entrance trusses and disrupted the start of an outdoor concert by the Backstreet Boys. Kym Koch-Thompson, spokeswoman for the WinStar World Casino and Resort, says the concertgoers were treated at the scene following Saturday's storm, then taken to hospitals in Oklahoma and Texas. She says they were all treated for minor injuries and released. The casino in Thackerville is about 70 miles (110 kilometers) northwest of Dallas. The casino says a storm packing winds of up to 80 mph (128 kph) struck...

When Ms. Franklin calls: Reporter reflects on Queen of Soul

Aug 20, 2018

NEW YORK — When I got the chance to interview Aretha Franklin for the first time in 2001, I was already a bundle of nerves: Even though it was just over the phone, I'd be talking to THE Queen of Soul! You could get no closer to rock 'n' roll royalty than the Queen herself. So my trepidation was magnified when a colleague told me not to expect much: Franklin was famously guarded and known for giving short, to-the-point answers and little in the way of introspection. Sure enough, when we spoke on the topic at hand — a VH1...

Ariana Grande tears up as she recalls Manchester tragedy

Aug 20, 2018

NEW YORK — The very mention of Manchester still brings Ariana Grande to tears. The singer cried during an interview Friday with Ebro for Beats 1 on Apple Music as she shared thoughts on the 2017 concert in England, when a suicide bomber killed 22 people. She said that terrorists "want you to be afraid," adding that those who just heard about it in the news had moved on. But for her and others, the challenge became just to "live in the moment" and not be overwhelmed by fear. Her album "Sweetener" includes a song for Manchester survivors, "Get Well...

Aug 20, 2018

BERLIN — Russian President Vladimir Putin made a flying visit to Austria to attend the wedding of the country's foreign minister Saturday before heading to Berlin for talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Austrian authorities imposed tight security measures around the site of the ceremony near the southern border with Slovenia, where Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl married her partner Wolfgang Meilinger, a businessman. Kneissl, an independent, was nominated by the pro-Russia Austrian Freedom Party, whose leaders also attended the wedding. Photos showed Putin dancing with the bride, who was dressed in a traditional Austrian costume. According to Austrian public broadcaster...
